PLAYER MANAGER
==============
Anco Software £19.95
After a long 4-5 month wait it's here, initially in the form of a heavily
bugged version (the ones with green labels) but now it's been fixed and
plays to all its expectations. (Blue label is the correct version)
As a few of you may have sussed by now, I'm somewhat of a soccer-fan
myself so after the brilliant "Kick Off" released in the summer of '89 I
couldn't wait to get my foot-balls round this particular software feast.
Everyone must be familiar with a football management type strategy
program, well everyone who has any vague interest in football that is,
from the early Football manager game on the ZX81/Speccy through to the
other 16bit versions. When Kick Off was released last year it left a great
deal of quality-starved Amiga-owning soccer fans breathless - it was the
answer to their dreams.. almost.. as an arcade game it was everything a
game should be 1/2 players, fast, easy to get in to and oh so playable -
plus it used the Amiga well and not surprisingly lifted "Arcade game of
the year award".
Rumours spread about a management type game using the successful strategy
formula and the playability and game-style of Kick Off. That program has
evolved to be "Player-Manager".
The scenario sees you as a 28 year old ex-international player drafted in
as player-manager of a lowly 3rd division side. Success is your mission,
nothing less than hard work and promotion will be tolerated by the rather
miserable board of directors.
You are given a squad of players and must study their skills, choose your
team and act cleverly in the transfer market as well as using your coach
to the best of his abilities.
When the program loads for the first time, a new scenario is created
(unless you are continuing with your previous team) - this takes around 8
minutes... PLEASE don't let this put you off!! This is just creating all
the details and 'personalities' of the 1000+ players who are in the game,
created randomly each time you start a new game.
The league is split into 4 divisions (I assume the other international
versions are the same!) and there are 10 teams in the 1st & 2nd divisions
and 12 in the 3rd and 4th divisions. The top 2 and bottom 2 teams are
promoted/relegated respectively. There is also a cup competition which has
about 5 rounds. (Not that I got past the 3rd!)
Every week you have the following options:
CLUB:
Check board feelings, this gives you a score represented by a percentage
and a rating - don't be suprised if the board is anything but happy - you
have to do really well to put a smile on their faces.
Check past records of previous season.
Check finances - important for transfer deals.
SQUAD:
Check player information and statistics. Each player has many individual
skills and abilities, including height, weight, speed, passing, tackling,
shooting, aggression and so on.. You can also see the players value
according to the board, what his status is with regard to disciplinary
points and if he's injured, when he's expected to recover. You can also
put players on the transfer market, give them transfer values or offer
them new contracts. From time to time, players request to go on the
transfer list - you can offer them a new contract or deny their request
altogether.
TACTICS:
Perhaps the most complex aspect of the game and perhaps the least used.
This option allows you to totally re-design the attacks and movement
patterns of your players all over the pitch, judge their pace and set up
dead-ball situations. 4 pre-set popular tactics are provided - 442 433
532 and 424. You are free to load and mess with these as you see fit.
LEAGUE:
Check the weeks results, check the fixtures and of course the league
positions of all 4 divisions. You also have the option to view all the
results when your game is over.
COACH:
Change tactics, change a players position, take a rest or administer extra
training. Your coach also passes info on about your teams morale and the
overall skill and strength of your squad in relation to your current
division.
SAVE GAME:
This can be done game by game if necessary! This was a feature needed in
the initial release due to a bug making the program crash every now and
again! Now I use it once a season!!
TRANSFERS:
Check the transfer market, you specify the type of player you're after and
the price range you're interested in. For the top 2 divisions you really
do need some quality players. Don't be surprised if you get promoted from
the 3rd to see your players flop in the 2nd division because they aren't
up to the task in hand!
CUP:
Check your next cup game and view the results of the last round, plus the
fixtures drawn in the next round. Try and make it to at least the 3rd
round or the Board get's very upset - especially if you are knocked out in
round one.
MATCH:
Finally this option takes you onto the match itself. You are shown the
opponents relative skill and you can also take a look at the opposing
stars so you can choose your team to judge them. Only the successful
managers will take all things into consideration... After viewing all you
need of the opposing team, it's time for you to select your team and 2
subs and tactics. If you haven't enough players then you can call in
reserve players instead. When you're happy with your team you can select
how the game will be displayed. There is either normal which is a 3 min
each way basic kick-off style game, fast mode which is like watching the
game on a giant version of the scanner - this is useful for watching
specific players and formations and finally there is the option to get the
result only. If you opt for the normal game then make sure you're playing
(if you haven't retired!) or you will just be watching!
IN PLAY:
The game (arcade section) plays just about the same as Kick Off with a few
subtle differences.. firstly there's the individual skills and abilities,
more intelligent keepers and the name of the player on the ball is
displayed, adding greatly to the feel of the game. At the start of the
program (initially) you are given the choice to control the team as a
whole or just your player - a person controlling the whole team as in Kick
off will be handicapped. If you are controlling your own player you must
watch carefully where he is and get yourself in position! Thankfully the
programmer has made the dot 2x bigger on the scanner! There is another
option too, there is a 'camera' mode where you have the option to put the
camera on any of your players (or indeed the opponents players) this way
you can centre on your man or watch suspect players. Subs can be brought
on and tactics change. Some players can get injured and red/yellow cards
bring penalty points and can lead to suspension!
After the game you are given the details of all scorers, yellow cards and
red cards plus any players who got injured. After that you get squad news
then general news before proceeding onto the next week.
Graphics:
The overall presentation of all the boxes, menus, icons and data is first
rate. It's very well thought out and is extremely effective allowing
quick, effortless access to all items of data. It's quite obviously been
developed on the St but don't let that prejudice your opinion - this time.
Game graphics are the same as Kick off, small, well detailed, fast and
well animated - I like them and can't find any grumbles with them.
All in all, well used and very well presented - the title screen is poor
however but that's hardly likely to put people off!
Sound:
Standard footy sounds in the arcade section - same as those used in Kick
Off.
Gameplay:
Offers immense depth and detail as yet to be matched in a similar type of
game. It has it all. Offers an extremely attractive option for single
players wanting this type of challenge. Plays superbly - enough to keep
any soccer half-wit occupied for the entire season. Extremely good.
Overall:
A friend of mine commented on seeing Player-Manager "It's like taking a
great game and spoiling it" - this is not an opinion shared by me, I still
think Kick off is great, it's just a different ball game to this. Kick off
is an arcade game, that gets better the more play it. This is a dedicated
1 player game and is basically what soccer fans have been crying out for.
Non-soccer afficianados will probably find the attention to detail and
immense depth of the game a little too much for their liking, if that's
the case it would be wiser to stick to Kick off.
Personally I can't think of a better value product at the moment in
relation to value for money. Soccer fans get this game at all costs, even
if it means getting an Amiga to play it on! Well done Anco.
Ratings:
Graphics: 78% Nice presentation, Good game graphics, if a tad small.
Sound : 75% Average for this type of game. Well used though.
Gameplay: 98% Very hard to pick faults. Very polished.
Overall : 95% An excellent way to spend 3 years in a swivel chair.
Footnote: 10% For the lousy packaging.. c'mon Anco!!
Footnote: Look out for Kick Off II released in May, with what looks like
many, many enhancements - watch Newsflash for further details!!!
